HP printing on SuSE 9.1

I have recently installed SuSE 9.1 on my computer, which is a 1.3
GHz Duron machine. It is able to connect to the local network and the
Internet without problems. It is also able to recognize that the
printer
attached to the serial port is an HP LaserJet 4P, and that the printer
attached
to the USB port is an HP Deskjet 648C. I was even able to
successfully print a test page from both printers, once. However,
OpenOffice is
unable to print from either > one, and when I go into YaST to attempt
to determine what is wrong with the printer setup, it says "CUPS
daemon died during initialization", and if an xterm is open during
this time it sometimes will show the message "unable to read
configuration file '/etc/cups/cupsddd.conf' - exiting". I have tried
this while logged in as root and gotten the same result. I tried
using the command "lppasswd -g sys -a root" in xterm, was prompted for
a new password and entered one, but this does not change the result in
YaST ("CUPS daemon died during initialization").
Using Alt-F2 and then Kprinter is also unable to print to either
printer.
On the advice of one wiser than I, I also tried going into YaST
and redid the reinstalling of cups, cups-client, and cups-drivers.
Then, I did an Online Update, which I believe completed although
someone else turned off the computer when it was done so I'm not sure.
When I went into YaST Hardware, and selected Printer, it ran
through the four steps.
1) Check Environment (appeared to go ok)
2) Check Database of Printers (appeared to go ok)
3) Load Current Settings (got halfway and then bombed with the message
"CUPS
daemon died during initialization".
4) Autodetect Printers

At this point it showed both printers (Laserjet 4P and Deskjet
648C). I
can edit the configuration for both, but it is not apparent to me how
one
deletes them and reinstalls them. Outside of YaST, using just the
Utilities -> Printing -> Printers option from the SuSE start icon, it
does not see these printers and gives the error message:

"Connection to CUPS server failed. Check that the CUPS server is
correctly
installed and running. Error: connection refused."

So, do I need to deinstall these printers and reinstall them, and
if so how does one do that? Do I need to start CUPS somehow, and if
so how? More generally, how should one go about getting an HP
Laserjet 4P and an HP Deskjet 648C to print with SuSE 9.1? Anybody
have any suggestions?

thanks,
ross
