Hmm, that reminds me of a problem that I had with installing SuSE (8.2?
earlier?) on a DELL PowerEdge 1400SC dual P3 machine. For some reason I
had to (or wanted to) rebuild the kernel for some tuning. Then I ran into
trouble because of the boot sequence. To boot SCSI the DELL had to do some
strange stuff, including (it seemed to me) "emulating" IDE disk from the
BIOS so that it could get the kernel, and essential kernel devices (like
the SCSI driver? DOH!). I remember having to jump through some hoops to
rewrite and compress something that looked like a "mini-root" for this
booting sequence. I don't remember the details (not something you do every
day), but there were SuSE notes and web pages that outlined the process.
You haven't by any chance done anything to change kernel? drivers? Wait,
you have RAID5, maybe there's a RAID driver that needs to be loaded? Do
you need anything from the RAID5 while you're booting? or only after?

Well, like they say: YMMV. I was momentarily chagrined when I couldn't
reboot my DELL 1400SC, but I perservered. Now I'm really happy with it.

I should be getting SuSE 9.1 upgrade any day now... so I might have some
of this kind of "fun" in my future, too. OTOH, I don't have RAID on it.
