OK, my old 30GB disk with Suse 9.0 died a couple of months ago, was then
running mandrake 10 on a 6 GB disk I dug out from an old box. Now I have
the pennies for a new harddisk and boxed SuSE 9.1 pro... OK, saved off my
emails and other important stuf to my samba server box and decided to go
for it with 9.1.
Put the 6 GB disk to one side for safe keeping and put a new 40GB disk in
and registered it in the BIOS by going into settings and making it detect
it. Started to install 9.1. Got the packages installed and then it went off
to do the "first boot".. oh oh, black screen with GRUB Geom Error in the
top left...
Was able to get into suse by using the dvd to boot installed system and so
was able to complete the installation but have been unable to get rid of
the boot problem... tried LILO and got "L 99 99 99" ad infinitum...
what I want to know is, will I still have a grub problem if I change my hard
disk setup to the following:
hda 6GB partitioned as
hda1 primary 256MB ext3 /boot
hda2 primary rest reiserfs /tmp
(will it make sense having the /tmp on a slow old disk???)
hdb 40gb partitioned as
hdb1 primary 6GB reiserfs /
hdb2 primary 512MB swap
hdb3 primary remainder reiserfs /home
if it's daft having the /tmp on a slow old disk, then I plan to use the
remainder of that 6GB disk as a fat32 partition for win98se for playing a
few games with such as fs 2000 which can't be run in Linux.
