I think this statement is wrong. I'm your "average" computer user and I
dumped Windows XP today. My reasons are, why should I contribute to
an OS that is bug ridden, full of security risks, and with no promise of
any real improvement in the future. Going by past history of MS anyway.
And what about the costs of the Windows OS. Looking in Computer Shopper
for August 2004 I see that Windows XP Home - Full version is GB£140.00 ex
VAT and SuSE Linux v9.1 Professional is GB£45 ex VAT. There's no contest
there is there? And SuSE contains just about everything that is in
Windows XP.
I'm certainly no "nerd" or "anorak", yet I can get things done in SuSE
Linux 9.1, and that includes just getting the nVidia drivers installed and
working. A small step for the rest of the world, but a giant leap for me.
With the proliferation of manufacturers of computer components, I don't
think you will ever get full hardware compatibility. It doesn't exist
within windows, and certainly won't within linux. And I find that the
command line is the most exciting thing since "breast enhancements". Not
that I'm going that route myself, you understand.
I find that the linux community is more than ready and willing to help
people such as me, as long as I'm prepared to help myself in the first
place, by doing a little basic research on the problems that are facing me
at the present time.
SuSE is stable and a pleasure to work with. Do yourself a favour, and
have another go. I promise you, it will be worth it in the short while.
Good luck,

Peter
