I want to thank you again for helping me. The problem turned out to be
that getting dns via dhcp didn't work on the Intel Pro 2100 (latest
firmware) in the Compaq while it does work on my IBM built-in a/b/g in
the Thinkpad. I set dns manually and - voila! - Internet. >sigh<
Thanks again. Even thought I solved my problem otherwise, I welcome the
knowledge you gave.
