as a followup

 I'm using Suse 9.1 with 2.6.4-52-smp this kernel # is from a SAFE
installation with the following settings

apm=off acpi=off hde=noprobe all the way thru hdk=noprobe

i'm ready to try again after *several* compiles one of which killed my linux
boot, so i just stated fresh again

i downloaded the source files again with this new installation and then used
kconfigure to extract and make, here is the error list I got
