Switch it to Gnome, it is generally claimed to be faster ;-)

Try using the Control Center and tweaking the appearance (Mosfet's Liquid
for example). And I know under Windows having a background image can
seriously affect system performance, although I have noticed that under
KDE...

To be honest, I haven't tried doing side-by-side tests. On my hardware (AMD
Athlon XP 2000+ through to Athlon64 3500+, both sides work suitably fast
and haven't warranted an investigation as to why one is slower than the
other.

Application start-up can be slower than Windows, Firefox and OpenOffice
being prime examples, but thereagain, Firefox under Windows takes longer to
load than IE and MS Office has pre-loader so that it starts more quickly...

In general use, neither platform has left me waiting to do certain actions
within the applications, or one not more so than the other.

On the 64-bit machine, SuSE 9.1 flies compared to XP, but as XP is only
32-bit and is choking the processor, it isn't really a fair test of the
OS's, just shows the difference between MS and open source in getting
software to market...
