Problems with scanner configuration

Hi NG,

after getting a new harddisk I had to install my SuSE 9.1 from scratch. I
combined this effort with setting up my Epson CX5400 (new as well)
printer-scanner.
Setting up the printer was no problem, but the scanner part is not quite so
easy.
The main reason for this is that the installation module
YaST->hardware->scanner does indeed detect my (USB) scanner and correctly
lists it as Epson-MPF (I suppose thats multi-function-printer), BUT when I
continue to the next tab (where it say "choose vendor and model") there is
no listing!
No vendors, no models.
A friend of mine did not have this problem (same printer, but he's running
SuSE 9.0), so I suppose this problem lies with SuSE 9.1.

The System is a SuSE 9.1 with all the patches loaded after first boot, plus
the KDE update to 3.3 with YaST from suse.com.

I am a bit at a loss as to what to do next. I tried reinstalling sane /
installing different versions / from tar-ball...
I did the suggested changes to dll.conf and epson.conf and as root dmsg|grep
scanner displays my scanner alright (and gives vendor/product-ID).

Soooo, the big question for me is: who the f*** stole those db-entries with
all the vendors and models???

Did anybody else hit upon the same problem?
Find a solution anyone?

Thx in advance
