Delay in logging in

I'm running SuSE 9.1 on an AMD machine running at 2Ghz with a gig of memory.
Logging in is very slow. (I'm not talking about X loading, just a shell
login.) If I give an incorrect password, it takes maybe a second or two to
tell me that. But if I give a correct password, it takes literally 45
seconds to a minute to give me a command prompt. It doesn't matter where
or how I'm logging in. Running 'su' from a shell gives the same delay as
logging in the first time. Running a program such as YaST, which requires
the root password, gives the same delay. The delay occurs with either a
normal user or root, including a brand new test user created just for that
purpose. It occurs with any shell (bash, zsh, csh, etc). It occurs
whether I'm running a console under X or Ctl-Alt-F? to another terminal.
Adding "set -x" to /etc/profile results in a long pause after I enter the
password, then about ten screens of output dumped to the screen. What ever
is causing the delay seems to be occurring before the actual shell program
starts to run. There's no disk activity during the delay, and top doesn't
show anything taking up significant processor time. I thought perhaps the
issue might be with shadow passwords and so disabled them. No change. Any
time I have to enter a password, there's a delay of close to a minute.

Any ideas or suggestions appreciated.
