Perhaps you're experiencing a problem (probably a feature) I encountered
recently. I had a temporary suspension of one of my mail accounts. I'm
not sure how this was handled on the server side, but I think it amounted
to refusing the connection during authentication. But after they restored
the account, I still could not retrieve mail (yes, this was on the
retrieval side). It turns out that apparently KMail, having had an
authentication request denied, marked the stored password as invalid or
replaced it with some other string (but did not erase that password). I
had to go into the KMail account configuration and re-enter the password.
After that, everything worked again. I later discovered the same thing
was required to get sending to work again (this server authenticates the
sending / SMTP side as well as the retrieval / POP side).
