|Was having an entirely different problem but I think the solution is the same in
|both cases. In /boot/grub/menu.lst change "vga=0x??? to vga=normal). That
|parameter tells it what resolution to start up at. If you say normal - or even
|just remove the parameter - it should start up using it's defaults.

That's it Kevin. Rebooted a number of times today to check out the
optimal settings but can't find one, just that it works now. It was
set at 0x31a. Changed it to 0x11a and got an error with a list of
optional modes to select. I tried one, option 9, listed as 0330 (I
assume that would be 0x330) 132x44 (got to be columns and lines). It
worked. Ugly, but it worked. Next I tried option 8 which was 030a at
132x43. Still ugly but worked. Next I tried 'scan' as the option and
it came up with a whole different set of options. I ended up
selecting option c, which says it is 0133 at 132x44. Ugly but far
better than not getting anything. Next time I'll try the 'normal'
setting and see what that does. I'll search to see if I can find a
listing of the hex settings for the non-graphical display. Everything
I have found so far is for the VESA VGA graphics. Apparently the one
doesn't work for the other.
