The following worked for me:
Open alsamixergui (it's on the "Multimedia-Volume Control" menu. Adjust
the appropriate sound levels until you get to a position you like.
Go to KDE Control Centre -> Sound and Multimedia -> Mixer, click the "Save
Current Volumes" button, and make sure the "Load volumes on login" box is
checked.
