How to einstall root?

My SuSE 9.1 is broken in that the root account shows a full screen YAST only
after logging in. When I terminate YAST root is completely looged off. Other
commands e.g. ALT F2 do not work.

If I log in whith another username the system seems to work normal, I even
can run commands whith root rights.

How can I reset or reinstall root in runlevel 5?
