Before you get flamed... Normally, it is good policy to only post the
relevant parts of log files which contain the anomalies. If you are
uncertain which log file to look in, just say that. If log file entries
will be relevant, somebody will, hopefully, point you in the right
direction ;-)
The only time I've experienced something similar was with duff memory... I
don't know which memory on my machine was duff, it used to randomly crash,
but running Memtest on the machine reported all memory was OK. Replacing
the memory with another set of DIMM's solved the problem, go figure...
Do you have a memory expansion in your machine? If so, try removing it and
see if the problem clears up - worked on my laptop...
Other than that, it could be an overheating problem, check the ventilation
slots aren't covered or full of fluff. Does the laptop seem to get overly
warm to the touch? I believe Linux tends to push the processor harder than
Windows, so can generate more heat, so good ventilation is even more
important...
If it isn't a memory or heat problem, then we need to start looking deeper
into the system. It could be a video driver or sound driver problem, for
example, or even an install that hasn't settled in properly - don't ask
why, but I've seen installs of Windows or Linux on machines report as
successfully installed, but they crash regularly, going through the same
install process again and everything works flawlessly...
I am using the same Kernel, so it isn't a Kernel problem itself, it could be
that it doesn't react well with your hardware, but more likely, it is going
to be a driver somewhere along the line that is causing problems - and
older Dell's had a reputation for not working with the original
manufacturers hardware (E.g. Creative Labs SB drivers or ATi video
drivers).
If the above quick hardware checks don't bring anything to light, please
provide some information on the sound and video chips you are using and
which drivers you have loaded...
