Since we're discussing experiences let me relate some of my recent ones.
I have never tried the dual boot route so cannot relate to your problems
completely. What I have done is use old former Windows machines to host
Linux. That has been painful only in that I had to learn new things and
not particularly from hardware compatabilities. I never expected to be
able to do the same things in my Linux machines as I do in the Windows
ones so perhaps that has helped give me the right attitude to simply
continue tweaking and learning. I have a solid RH 7.3 machine serving
my personal website. That is all I ask of it. Now, I have embraced
Suse and am finding it fun and suprisingly cabable. Only last night
I dedicated a new machine to Suse. The MB upgrade from my old Celeron
on it to a P4 went flawlessly when I switched to the smp kernel. You
say you don't have time to fool around with Linux, and if that is really
the case I wonder why you are so willing to jump around and try so many
different OS's before getting a firm grip on one of them. Even though I
have used Suse for about a year now and RH for a few years prior, I am
often asking questions here in this newsgroup about things that I was
unable to dope out on my own, and this group has been most helpful.
The last significant question I had was how to update KDE to 3.3, and
I was tersly pointed in the right direction resulting in success. Some
of the real journeyman Suse experts don't have time to be wordy and
polite but they hit between the eyes with a fact and leave, but they do
help. As you state that you have tried many different systems in the
last year or so, I'd reckon that you will remain a newbie until you
land on one and kick it into what you want from it. But, from my
experiences, I'd suggest that you do your experimenting on a different
box than the one you use for your routine stuff. By throwing in the
towel, you will miss a great experience and terriffic free software.
