Having done a fresh install of SuSE 9.1 on my test machine, I was shocked by
how bad the fonts looked compared to my workstation. I tried fiddling round
with the fonts, but that didn't really help.

Then I remembered, I had upgraded my main 9.1 machines to X.Org. I did the
same with the new machine and the fonts were smoother again - not quite so
smooth as my main machine, but close, I need a bit more fine tuning...

(This is fonts on LCD panels, which we had a big discussion about here a
while back - just after 9.1 came out ISTR.)

I'm not sure what X.Org do differently to XFree with their font rendering
technologies, but it makes a huge difference on LCD panels. The XFree
installation that comes with SuSE 9.1 looks blurred and out of focus, and
the anti-aliasing only seems to make it worse. Switching to X.Org and the
characters are much sharper, almost on a par with Microsoft's ClearType.

With the XFree installation, I can work on the machine for about 10-15
minutes before it makes my eyes go funny, working on the X.Org machine, I
can use it for hours at a time.

I'll be looking forward to having it as a standard feature in 9.2, the
upgrade in 9.1 didn't go smoothly and a couple of minor things are broken -
error warnings in Gnome, but as I don't usually use Gnome, that isn't a
problem that needs urgently fixing...
