ftp vs unable to connect

hi,
i use suse 9.1 with kde 3.1. i am able to start the vsftpd server at
prompt, but find it sleeping by ps a command. when i try to connect to
local host 127.0.0.1 by ftp open command i get message that after the
connection remote server has closed the connection. And at the server
side i get message that the address in not ipv4.
Can anyone guide me or suggest me some websites to connect to first
localhost then to another machine.
