Suse 9.2 Samba problem

I get the following error when I try to browse my network under Suse 9.2:

"Unable to find any workgroups in your local network" The windows clients
can see the suse server but they cannot browse either. I've had no problems
in the past with older version of suse.

If I launch swat> status it shows that smbd is not running and it won't
start even when I run it from the command line.

If anyone has any ideas on what to check next please let me know.
