Ok, tried this. That is, I ran everything as su -, but same thing happened
again. Both ./configure and make runs as they are supposed to, and make
install (using Checkinstall) run as it should up until this strange problem
occurs.

Any other ideas? Any chance it is a system related problem...? i.e. a bug
related to the update of kde and/or gcc and/or Qt? It didn't use to be this
way, and I have updated all these packages...
