Hi Vesa,

I have not done this by hand ( I use apt for all my updates and stuff )
however looking at what apt did it does seem as simple as deleting
XFree rpms and then installing the Xorg ones, then re-install the
Nvidias.

If you look at the Xorg rpms just rpm -e "equivalent Xfree rpms" then
install the Xorg ones it replaces, that was it really no hassle no
changing of any scripts of files on my behalf.

I keep the d/loaded Nvidia package ( from Nvidia site not the one from
Yast ) in my /root dir and have the kernel source installed and
prepped:-

( as root )
init 3
cd /usr/src/linux
make cloneconfig
make prepare-all

cd ~
sh ./NVIDIA-blah..blah...blah.6629-pkg1.run
init 5

and that is it, I am using the same XF86Config with no alterations, I
have not had time to read the Xorg docs so have not tweaked anything if
anything needs it.

I tested first on my old testing box and it worked fine with an onboard
810 chipset so just used synaptic ( gui frontend for apt, going all
"Pointy Clicky"© in my dotage :) to change on my main machine, I am
lucky in the respect that I have a spare cloned drive of
my /, /usr...etc and my /home is on a separate drive so if all goes
t^ts up I can just swap drives and start again :)

If your system is as "confused" as it looks and you are seriously
thinking of a complete re-install then it might be worth giving it a
try, if it borks real bad then nothing lost, if it does not help then
still nothing lost.

I would suggest giving Apt a go but it needs a "clean" system to start,
you could install it and it might point out a few things that need
correcting and help solve your problem:-

http://linux01.gwdg.de/apt4rpm/

However apt can really scr^w your system up if you are not careful
( been there done that, more than once in the past ) but it looks like
you have nothing to lose so give it a go even if it is only to see what
might be wrong on your system.

post or mail if you want anymore help, I will be out for a while today
though, got to go fix/fsck a virus riddled XP < insert last words from
L. Oates here> ;-)

HTH
