|I have installed SuSE 9.2 Professional on two different machines.
|On both of them /bin/tar does not work properly: it dumps core
|both on creation and extraction of archives.

Highly unlikely to be us. Maybe you had a corrupted RPM on the media?

rpm -V tar

will do a verify on the files that came from the tar RPM.
