Yesterday I started to install Xorg and decided first to make backups.
Contrary to my usual habits, I logged in as root and started KDE to copy
/home and other relevant stuff. While waiting, GLMatrix screensaver
started, and I thought that it was running a lot faster than usual. So I
checked glxgears, and guess what?
linux:~ # glxgears
39260 frames in 5.0 seconds = 7852.000 FPS
47776 frames in 5.0 seconds = 9555.200 FPS
47766 frames in 5.0 seconds = 9553.200 FPS
47767 frames in 5.0 seconds = 9553.400 FPS
47767 frames in 5.0 seconds = 9553.400 FPS
47768 frames in 5.0 seconds = 9553.600 FPS
Excited about this development I logged off, then logged in as a normal
user, started glxgears and saw FPSs to be... around 100. WTF? I ended the
session, logged back in as root, and fired up glxgears. 106 FPS.
So, if I log in as root straight after reboot, 3D works as it should. If I
log in as a normal user (tried this with both of my accounts), 3D doesn't
work right. Software acceleration remains in effect also if I end session
and become root after logging in as a normal user.
SuSE's manual says that "For security reasons, only users belonging to the
group video are permitted to access the 3D hardware. Therefore, make sure
that all local users are members of this group." I made sure, and all
local users definitely _are_ members of group video.
It really looks like the problem is only with some small setting
somewhere. But bugger me if know what setting and where. Any ideas how to
proceed from here?
