Sounds like the Vectra's video card isn't being recognised, the symptoms you
describe sound like a video card problem not a monitor problem, although it
could be setting a scan rate the monitor doesn't support (unlikey I would
have thought, it should use VESA modes during set-up I think).

What video card do you have? I know HP used to have a habit of building
their own, slightly non-standard cards, but I guess in recent years they
should be using off-the-shelf components.

When booting into the Grub menu on the CD/DVD, try selecting either text
mode or a lower graphics resolution, this should get you as far as
specifying the graphics card and monitor correctly.
