Try dropping back to a text-mode install, then specifying the video card and
monitor before trying to load X. It sounds like the settings the card and
monitor support aren't being read correctly and the scan rate is too high.

I must admit, I haven't done a SuSE install to a machine that doesn't have a
TFT display, and it always seem to default to 60Hz, so I haven't seen any
problems. Also, apart from the laptops SiS chipset, all the machines have
had nVidia GeForce 4 or FX series cards.
