Let's assume that you have WinXX installed and that you've resized the NTFS
down a few GB to hold SUSE, or what ever.
1) If you used lilo:
Let's also assume that you've used LILO as the dual boot loader. During
the installation the original mbr is saved specifically so that it can be
restored. To restore it, effectively disconnecting your Linux side boot
into your Linux side, su to root and issue:
lilo -U
Lilo takes the original copy of mbr it stored away for this purpose and
replaces the lilo version of mbr. When you reboot Windows will appear is
if you've never installed Linux. You still have to use DOS's fdisk or
Window's Computer Manager to reclaim the Linux partion and convert it to
vfat or NTFS, or Partition Magic to add it back into your main NTFS
partition. Or, if you wanted only Windows to appear when doing an HD boot
you could, before you run lili -U, create a boot floppy. Then, when ever
you wanted to boot to the Linux side put your boot floppy in and reboot.
After Linux appears you can remove your boot floppy.
2) If you used Grub:
Prior to W2K and XP - Open a DOS box or boot a DOS floppy and run
"fdisk /mbr" while on the C: drive.
One can't say their W2K or XP will not be affected, but the usual method is
to boot the W2K or XP CD and get to the Recovery Console and run FIXMBR and
FIXBOOT. And, like before, if you create a Linux boot floppy and don't
reclaim the Linux partition you can boot into it by booting the boot
floppy.
