Hi there,
I've noted that on this newsgroup people to get flamed for stating they've
got suse in some other manner than buying the CD pack, with (for some
people) the un-needed documentation.
Why exactly IS this? Linux has always been free, as someone who'd been in
the computing field 20 years i've always known this, and simply dabbled in
red hat from time to time throughout my work.
However, it would appear larger companies, ie: novell, are trying to make it
as hard as possible to download the ISO's. I find it extremely naive of
people to think that 'well we should give a bit back' - it's open-source my
friends, just because a large multi-billion pound company decides to start
charging (for their documentation apparently) for the box sets, why should
people automatically get told 'oooo some other method, tut tut!'
I'm aware you can do an FTP install of 9.2, but it's not out yet. There's
certainly nothing immoral or even illegal about downloading 9.2 off p2p
networks, such as emule, right now. You'll note Novell have had press
statements recently regarding their novell-netware being pirated. No such
thing for suse, it's the whole point of it. It's what you need without
paying money to a large company! ie: microsoft.
SO to round up, some of your daft comments in replies to threads are
unfounded and generally incoherent, ie:
"If you're disabled and have broadband, you're not poor! It's more expensive
than dial-up!" - O.T, but totally false
People have stated suse 9.2 pro is too expensive, why? Because it is!!The
whole point of getting everyone onto linux (will happen one day, except for
bigbusiness in my personal opinion) is so they adapt to it as opposed to
microsoft products. Younger folk, teens, shouldn't have to go bloody well
PAY for it, that's never happened before!
I feel it's time you old codgers get with the times, and face that linux's
moto has been 'open to all', with the cute wee penguin, aw.... so cute....
Linux should *NEVER* be paid for, otherwise it simply becomes similiar to
micro$oft. That's how micro$oft started, remember? All those years ago they
done the same thing with minor programmes, you paid for the documentation.
They really were minor programs however, and now linux is going the same
way, it's a real shame.
Starting with 'er you're just paying for the box and documentation' suggests
things are only to get worse. You'll get the linux that's worked upon by a
couple of large companies and they charge a lot for it, as it's 'full',
whereas REAL free ones wont be able to compete.
And (should never start a sentence with 'and' or 'because' - remember that
people) that's linux-progress is it?
J
