Newb with dvd burner probs please help (suse 9.1 pro)

Any help is appreciated,
I just bought a memorex dvd burner

using the ignore setting) but I can't test what it burned becuase the
drive wont read anything (not even a cd). Is there anyway I can tell if it
is the drive or if it is 9.1 and if it is suse does anyone know of a way i
can correct the problem? Sorry I can't really offer any more
info...because i am a newb heh heh. Also I didn't have any problems with
the hp cdburner that I put in before the dvdburner. Also couldnt really
check suse's hardware database becuase from what I could tell it didnt
have any dvd burners listed at all
