I just installed SuSE 9.1 Professional on an IBM Think Pad (T41P)
laptop.
But having a problem about startup of KDE. Here are more details.
Hardware Configuration:
CPU: Pentium Mobile,
RAM: 512 MB,
OS installed before partition: MS Windows XP Professional,
Partitioned and second OS installed: SuSE Linux 9.1 Professional,
Mode of the machine selected during installation: Stand alone
Admin account: root account created with password
User account: a user called "iamuser" created without any password
Chronology of KDE 3.2 start up problem observation:
0) After installation, rebooted and SuSE Linux started
1) KDE 3.2 starts and everything appeared fine
2) I could use Konqueror and browse internet without any problem
3) Installed gcc and g++
4) gcc and g++ works fine
5) Installed Yahoo Messenger
6) Yahoo Messenger works fine
7) Keyboard, mouse, sound card, monitor everything perfectly
operational
8) From shell, logged as root (su and then root password at prompt)
9) Rebooted machine from "su" prompt (reboot)
10) SuSE Linux started and KDE 3.2 starts as usual
11) After a while....
12) Logged out and selected "restart"
13) Now changed bootup to Windows XP
14) Windows XP started and did something and restarted the machine to
return to Linux
15) SuSE Linux starts with several blinking of the screen , but no KDE
3.2 start up appears
16) A logon dialogue box appears with userid and password fields
17) Entered user name in the userid field (but that user doesn't have
any password yet)
18) As there is no password set for that user log on failed
19) Entered "root" as user in the userid field with root password
20) The KDE 3.2 doesn't start up
21) Changed the startup mode to "failsafe" and logged as root
22) Log in successful as root
23) At shell prompt (as root), deleted the original user (commands:
userdel -rf iamuser), user account deleted successfully
24) Created the same user again (commands: useradd -gusers
-d/home/iamuser -m iamuser)
25) After rebooting, the KDE 3.2 starts and everything starts fine
Questions:
1) Why this happens and how could I escape from this problem ?
