Trying to build gaim-1.0.3

I have SuSE 8.2 and I'm trying to use gaim to connect to other IM
protocols than just AIM. AIM works. The others (MSN, Yahoo, ICQ) don't.
Something about "protocol not supported". There's also a proxy involved.

When I asked here I was told to get a newer version of gaim. The latest
is 1.0.3. There is no prepackaged version for SuSE so I have to build
it. In building it I got errors saying that I needed pkg-config and glib
2.0. I found pkg-config and glib 2.0 and installed them. But ./configure
says:

checking for GTK+ - version >= 2.0.0... no
*** Could not run GTK+ test program, checking why...
*** The test program failed to compile or link. See the file config.log
for the
*** exact error that occured. This usually means GTK+ is incorrectly
installed.
configure: error:
*** GTK+ 2.0 is required to build Gaim; please make sure you have the GTK+
*** development headers installed. The latest version of GTK+ is
*** always available at http://www.gtk.org/.

Yet I have:

Trying to get Gtk+ from http://www.gtk.org/ gives me a glib-2.4.0.tar.gz
which I unpack, configure, make and make install. Back to gaim and
configure gives me the same error as above. What now?
