Suse 9.2 & Checkinstall aborting

Hey all..

For a while now I've had a problem getting checkinstall to work. I seem
to remember (Been a while and I'm getting old) that I had no problems
when I was running 8.X. At least under 9.1 and 9.2 checkinstall only
process about 1 out 20 packages. The only changes I've made to
checkinstallrc is to add the doc packages path. It is currently set to
only make the rpm. I am using version 1.6.0beta3. As an example I get:

pwd: cannot get current directory: Invalid argument
chmod a+r src/libchm.la
/bin/sh /libtool --mode=install cp src/libchm.la /usr/local/lib
/bin/sh: /libtool: No such file or directory
make: *** [install] Error 127

**** Installation failed. Aborting package creation.

Cleaning up...OK

This similar to all the other failures. I run it from a sux- konsole
normally, but I've also tried sudo and booting into root. I've run
./configure make from a user konsole, which have noe errors, and then
try checkinstall. When it fails I try make install which works, but
doesn't give me a rpm.

Any help would be appreciated...
