Semi-true FUD... Many hardware vendors don't provide drivers for their
equipment, so it is up to the community to try and work out how the
equipment works and write the drivers.
Individual users will, usually, not have to write their own drivers, unless
they have very strange hardware which no-one else uses (and ATi graphics
card don't fall into that category) or they want a challenge.

I would suggest yanking the USB cable and trying it first with the Ethernet
cable if you can. That should allow you to set up a normal network
connection and allow the device to set you IP address, gateway and DNS
information automatically for you.
YaST should then be able to recognise that there is a cable modem there and
allow you to set your account information... I've never directly connected
from a PC to a cable/DSL modem using SuSE, just with my IPCop firewall, but
it was straightforward, even though it was in text mode, so I would guess
SuSE's set-up will be even easier with YaST ;-)
