My slow root hard disk doesn't help, but I still get reasonable performance.

What sort of figures are you talking about? Using SMB to transfers to a
Windows file server I get 8-9MB/s, to another SuSE box using NFS its even
higher.

Screen repaints are instant, usually better than Windows.

Network browsing is plenty fast enough - it finds the Windows servers and
shares faster than the Windows clients can!

FTPing from an internet server usually gives me transfer rates approaching
my ADSL's bandwidth (2mbps), I don't have any FTP servers on my network, so
I can't talk about theoretical maximums for that.

I am using nVidia as well (an old Ti4600) with the nVidia drivers.

It sounds like there is something seriously wrong with your installation to
be making performance that slow, my machine has less than half the
horsepower of your's and doesn't show any of the same problems, therefore I
would guess it is something in your configuration which has gone awry.
