Starting daemon at boot

Probably a noob question, but...
What steps does one have to take to make sure a program gets started at
boot time ?
I want to have my SuSE92 box start the vsftpd deamon automatically.
I have tried just adding a symlink to /etc/init.d but that didn't work.
The manuals probably have something on this, but I could not find it in
the chapters about booting. Where to look ?

TIA
Schraalhans
