One of my PCs (the last one with Windows on it) is dual-boot - WinXP SP2 and
SuSE 9.1. It's a 2.6GHz with 1.5Gb RAM (it's used for digital photography).
SuSE runs like greased lightning. Windows performance is generally okay but
not stunning, except when viewing folders full of image files (which, after
all, is what the machine is for). Windows Explorer slows to a crawl while
writing the icons for the files - not just in thumbnail mode but also in
'list' view where it's only drawing generic tiff or jpeg icons. It can take
15-30 secs to list a folder containing 50-100 images. And woe betide me if
I try to do anything with those files while it's doing it - eg, if I try to
move a bunch of files, Explorer stops at the one whose icon is being drawn
with a 'file is in use'-type message. Viewing and moving image files with
Explorer is also the one thing guaranteed to make the system crash sooner
or later.

Windows XP was pre-installed and the only significant changes made to the
system have been M$'s own upgrades/patches (including SP2) and - naturally
- installation of Zone Alarm and AVG anti-virus.

The SuSE installation is out-of-the-box (don't use it much on this machine
so haven't had the time to do any tweaking).
