During the install, there's an option for whether you want to boot to
desktop or command prompt. If you boot to command prompt, you can enter
"startx" , to start the desktop. If you want to make it permanent, edit
the file /etc/inittab and change the line id:3:initdefault: to
id:5:initdefault:.
