I copy and paste my own answer regarding HP Scanjet 5300C and SuSE 9.2,
posted a few days ago; This scanner has usb interface also. If you can use
it, your problem is solved:

I do not agree. I have the HP Scanjet 5300C, and it works quite fine with
SuSE 9.2 and Kooka;only one problem: I can't scan with resolutions lower
than 300 ppp. If you want to install it:
(1) update sane package. The one in the installation DVD does not work with
this scanner. You can find the update here:
http://packman.links2linux.org/?query=sane&action=search
(2) Remove module hpusbscsi; open Konsole and run, as root:
rmmod hpusbscsi
(3) Run scanimage -L to see if the scanner is now detected; you should see
something like this:
Alberto@linux:~> scanimage -L
device `avision:libusb:002:003' is a Hewlett-Packard ScanJet 5300C flatbed
scanner
(4) Install the scanner with YaST
(5) edit the file /etc/hotplug/blacklist as root, and add hpusbscsi at the
end of the file.
And that's all. The problem is that he module hpusbscsi, formerly used to
access the scanner with SCSI emulation, prevents the correct
detection/access to the device. I spent several days doing "trial and
error" to find the fix, but it works.
