Since you must be connected WHEN you boot with the SuSE cd or boot
disks, you need an ISP connection which is always on. ADSL is one such.
Dialup is no good I think, because if you reboot the machine the
connection will be broken and will not be re-made until you are back in
windows or some other operating system which has an autodialling method.
The SuSE linux ftp installer does not have such an autodialler. It
relies upon an internet connection with DHCP/DNS already being present.
That is provided by a typical broadband modem or modem/router
combination. I use a D-Link modem. It is connected permanently to my ISP
and it makes no difference if my computer if on or off or even
removed physically. So when booting into the SuSE installer the ISP
connection is there ready to be used.
You would find dial up to be terribly slow and expensive. Perhaps a week
to download. Better to buy the package. Or have a trial broadband
connection fpr ftp-ing SuSE...
