Howdy NG,
This is a problem I ran into and spent many curse words on. I'm trying
to send out some log files and when I SEND the email out with the
attachments, I kept getting error messages from TBird saying it could
not send my attachment files and to check my Mail and Newsgroup account
settings.
So I try and I can not find any heading for Mail and Newsgroup setting
in the Thunderbird Tools, Account Settings or Tools, Options...WTF. Get
up and shut the window and start yelling at this bitch. It makes ME feel
better.
So I go to the Thunderbird help section and do a search on 'attachments
fail'. It comes back with hundreds of hits but there all functional
specifications for the Thunderbird project. I don't want to read their
damn functions specs. Maybe there's a FAQ that covers it. Yep theres a
FAQ but it has less than 20 topics and none apply. This sucks, I really
want this OS to work and I'm getting frustrated trying to make it do
simple things; like the week I spent trying to get my PCI modem to work
and the 2 weeks it took me to get my USB printer to work, or the 2 weeks
I tried getting the Via drivers to work that supported SuSe8.1, ONLY
8.1. Seems that LINUX is not upward compatible for software, whats good
enough for 8.1 means nothing if you have 8.2.
Well now I know why my attachments don't get sent out, I drag and drop
them into the TBird application from Konqueror. Seems like drag and
drop is not supported with this application for attachments. If you use
the paper clip attach tool, they will be sent correctly. This is just
ridiculous and piss poor software testing.
I think a bug as big as this would be caught in the first round of alpha
test, not when the product ships. There must be a new version of TBird
with this fixed by now. So I check for updates for TBird and guess what,
no new updates. My About says I'm at .8 rev level. The TBird site says
it's shipping 1.0. I did the YOU update and got the new TBird
downloaded but I guess they didn't bump the version number....another
big FUBAR for the team.
I've been in the computer industry for over 30 years and an engineer for
over 20, I've coded, tested, documented and shipped many software
projects. I was attracted to Linux because of the open source and
ability to tune it for embedded applications. I am however, very
disappointed in the quality of the applications the more I get into it.
On the surface SuSe 9.2 does offer a good solution to the neophyte
Linux user for getting a system up and running quickly, I hope your
have a better experience than I'm having.
