pcmcia ethernet adapter (asix ax88190) vs. suse 9.1

Hi list,

i recently updated the linux installation on my laptop from suse 8.0
to 9.1 to get my pcmcia wlan card running. all went well, except that
i can't use my pcmcia ethernet card any more. The latter worked
flawlessy with both 8.0 and during the networked installation of the
9.1 distro (my lappy doesn't have a bootable cd-rom drive), so this is
kind of bizarre.

the card in question is labelled "Edimax 10baseT/100baseTX mobile
network adapter" and has an asix ax88190 chipset, which is appearantly
handled by the axnet_cs driver:

[lsmod | grep axnet]

axnet_cs 16516 1
ds 17284 5 axnet_cs
pcmcia_core 61636 3 axnet_cs,ds,yenta_socket

cardmgr does seem to handle the card well:

[var/log/boot.msg]

cardmgr[1252]: socket 0: Asix AX88190 Fast Ethernet
cardmgr[1252]: executing: './network start eth%d 2>&1'
cardmgr[1252]: + eth%d: error fetching interface information: Device
not found

I guess there's something wrong with /etc/pcmcia/network or with the
parameters passed to or from it - but looking at the script, I've got
to admit that it's far beyond my grasp of shell scripts.

I really appreciate any help -

thank you in advance,
Thoralf.
