I agree with Bob about linux utility dd.
It doesn't do smart cloning, but that means that every bit is preserved,
and it doesn't matter what file system is on disk. It is byte by byte
copy. The bad is that you'll need same size or bigger media (another HD).
Backup can be shorter than taking disk image, can be taken more often,
like small incremental backup before new software installation etc.

Advice to use tape is nowadays obsolete, but principles are applicable.
