... a desktop goes beyond this "placing things on the desktop"
functionality. i'm using icewm right now, which is NOT a desktop,
and i've got icons all over the left side of the desktop.
a 'desktop' is the integration of the windowing system with
underlying system utilities and includes the integration of
other desktop components within the desktop environment
(this is DCOP's main function in kde).
