I have always used a Reiser FS since SuSe 7.0. I have always found it to be
reliable and have only had one instance where the reiser filesystem was
corrupted. In my case reiserfsck --rebuild-sb cured the problem.
In your case I think you probably induced the problem by powering off. If
you powered off by unplugging or switching off the power at the electric
socket, then the disconnection will certainly have created spikes that can
sometimes cause disruption to your data. As a lot of data is cached in a
linux system this is wrote to the HD before shutdown and is why the
filesystem must be cleanly unmounted. If that is how you
powered off then you can corrupt any filesystem on any OS that way.
Next time you have a lockup, try ctrl-alt-esc to bring up the kill item.
Click the window of the non-responding program. If that doesnt work try
ctrl-alt-backspace to restart the x-server or ctrl-alt-F1 to see if you
can log into an alternate console and fix things from there. If that
doesn't work, the last resort should be your reset switch on your computer.
Some machines do not have a reset button, but can be powered off by holding
in the power switch for about 4 to 6 seconds (Bios controlled). Failing all
that then you will have to switch off at the supply.
