OK, I too have had my share of problems here. I downloaded using Windows
XP since I was on it at the time, then burned it (Firefox and
Thunderbird) plus the new version of Open Office to a CD. Thunderbird
was easy but both Firefox and Open Office are giving me a lot of grief.
I start out with the tar.gz and can gunzip OK but after that I can't
seem to get anywhere with the tar files, even after going command line.
And yes I am effectively a newbie since the last time I was playing with
LINUX was in 1996 when I had a triple boot system (DOS, LINUX, and
OS/2). The frigging Windows 95 CD decided it was going to run scan disk
and repair the 'corrupted' MBR and files without even asking my
permission. I stopped it as soon as I saw what was going on but even
after a few minutes (bathroom break due to coffee) it was way too late.
I have hated Microsoft and all things Windows or Redmond ever since. The
only reason I use it at all is because the weenies at work insist on it.
I never crashed DOS except once intentionally, LINUX was stable even
back then, and I loved OS/2.
Back on topic, how does one get these things to install? Since it is my
machine I can log on as root superuser and still not get it to work?
It is an AMD XP clocked at 1150MHz so it is probably a 1300+ by their
standards, 390 MB ram, an MSI KT4V mother board, plain old dial up modem
(I live 500 feet to far for DSL) and a sound blaster. I doubt that the
system has anything to do with it but it may be the LINUX distros I am
using, courtesy if IBM. I received free both the SUSE enterprise server
complete with 4 CD-ROM disks, and days later a new Novell LINUX Desktop.
I installed each on its very own drives 13GB and 20GB and the came up
just fine. I am happy so far but installing new software is a bit tough.
Any comments, please?
BTW, now I need another drive to put my old Red Hat onto. This is the
beauty of having a bios that allows you to hit f11 and boot from any
disk in the system. I think it is Award but I never pay attention to
that since I am waiting to hit the f11 key. I already have too many
drives, DOS, LINUX (Red Hat, IBM server, IBM office), Windows 2000 Pro,
and Windows XP. I learned the hard way not to put too much on one disk
and do a multi-boot from a fixed C: DOS. It used to go to LILO and ask
me where to go, then if I hit DOS it would take me into Windows 2000
boot manager where I could pick a version of windows or just plain DOS.
Unfortunately IBM and GRUB had different ideas. Only my DOS was lost but
I am still trying to recover that, mostly for games (about 100) for my
granddaughter.
I think I may have just over posted.

P.S. Anybody with any good advice can reach me at bbaka@syix.com, the
underbar was just to defeat some spam since I get about 100 every day.
