Hi, I'm not familiar that modem and if it can do the PPPoE logon to
network for you? like routers can because its the best way to go.

Rather than setting up SuSE to do the PPPoE login the better thing to do
is have the Speedstream 5100 modem [if its able?] or a cheap on sale
under $20 router do the PPPoE logon to network via your sbc
username@whatever domain and password stored in the router or the
Speedstream 5100 if it has this feature?

Then once your logged in and connected to the SBC netwok SuSE will see
the connection during install as LAN connection auto-setting up
everything just fine!

Bad way to go but since your past install you can add a PPPoE connection
thru YaST, open Network Devices, click on Network Card and I'm not
going past that but it'll probably ask is your connection by DHCP
server [SBC is Not] and hopefully will offer PPPoE as connection type.

Then you'll need to enter SBC network settings, I know SBC requires you
you use your domain i.e username@sbcglobal.net and password.

DSL users should be configured to obtain the DNS server settings
automatically.

you know what would be better is post this question in the newsgroup
sbcglobal.help.tech.linux on the SBC news server I think its
news.sbcglobal.net where Linux users are there to help.
