Change console resolution Suse 8.0

I'm setting up a console only box to run a particular application. I need
the console in 640x480 because this is an old piece of software and that's
the screen it is designed for. However, Suse 8.0 has installed with a
1024x768 console resolution. Now I worked out that this has something to do
with a vesa frame buffer but I can't work out how to change it. I've
changed the lilo settings for VGA=xxx but this has no affect. Can someone
point in the right direction as to how to get the console resolution
correct?
