I confess that, since I bought Suse 9.2 Pro (yes, pair real money for it
from the manufacturers) I have tried to load it up three times - each time
on a new hard disk. I run it on a Pentium 3 (800MHz) and simply cannot get
it to make a sucessfull load. The installer refuses to work with my Philips
LCD monitor so it needs to be installed in text mode. After several hours
the system clains to be installed but refuses to see the network card in the
machine - or the audio card! (both work happily when the windows disk is
inserted). It will get onto the internet through my Network Router (even
though it claims not to see the network card which it is now operating
through!) but will not allow setting up of the network because 'it cannot
find a network card'? Consequently I cannot get it to see my network
printers and have no hope of trying to network it with my Windows network.
I'm not trying to flame Suse, I desperately want to work on a Linux System
and bought Suse 9.2 because it seemed to be the most mature system. I have
now bought Mandrake and will attempt to run that system (on another new hard
disk).
Yes I am a Windows user but it seems that phrase is the key - I can actually
use Windows without having to have a deep and intimate knowledge of the
componenet of the OS - Suse Linux is possibly as good or better than Windows
(heaven knows, I am not a fan of Gates' products) but it is not in a
position to wrest the market from Microsoft simply because it is so
difficult to get going - load time for Windows XP on new disk around 2
hours, load time for Suse 9.2 on new disk around 6 hours but with several
failed starts.
If my windows installation fails I pick up the phone to Microsoft or get
onto the Windows XP user groups and get useful guidance on how to solve the
problem, when (not if) a Linux installation fails we get lambasted by the
users on groups like this for being Windows users. How can we learn to use
this superior(?) operating system if we can't even get it to load up and run
for us.
At this point umpteen users will reply that this never happened to us and I
must be doing something wrong!
