Check content of /etc/resolv.conf
might look like this
domain xxxx.yyy
search xxx.yyy
nameserver 123.456.789.1
nameserver 456.789.012.6
Can you ping the ipaddress of any of the nameservers then
dig and nslookup can be used for troubleshooting.
Can you ping localhost and 127.0.0.1 else your troubles are in your
configuration of your system. These pings must work before you
start working on any other network problem.
----------------
If you are using dynamic IP adresses (dhcp client) towards your ISP and
the resolv.conf is empty - either your IP setting is wrong or your ISP
may be down or have blocked your MAC address for a period
