I use Firefox for browsing, KMail for E-mail, and Thunderbird for news
(on this machine: Debian Sarge with KDE). I don't think I've ever tried
"Send Link ..." om Firefox before, so I just did, from the context menu.

It did work, though it took a couple of seconds. What happened appears
to be:

1. It opened an instance of Konqueror with a "mailto:" link as the URL.
2. Then it opened a KMail "Compose" window.

This explains why it wasn't quicker. It also makes sense to me. I
almost never click directly on a URL in E-mail (a habit left from my
late and unlamented Windows usage), but copy it to the clipboard and
paste it into the browser (which, for other reasons, I keep on a
different virtual desktop anyway). So I imagine KMail is still set to
use Konqueror as the default browser.

Anyway, I think what you need to do is a minor configuration adjustment
to Firefox. Open a tab or window with the URL 'about:config'. The
preferences you meed to change are under
'network.protocol-handler.expose' and
'network.protocol-handler.external', for the 'mailto' protocol.

(Incidentally, these are good references for options in Mozilla apps in
general.)
