tcpdump is your friend. You can watch what packets appear on the wire.

but yes i agree, i remember icmp was blocked in some kind of default
firewall configuration. In fact I think this was the case before the
firewall was configured or the script in rc.d hadnt yet run for some
reason. (like say during a new hardware detect)
