suse-9.2 kde-3.4 base & arts problems

hi,
I upgraded my 9.2 to kde 3.4 using the suse rpms but
could not get kde up or sound. Backleveled to the
previous kdebase-3.3 and arts to 1.3.2-3 to fix.
The problem seems to begin around kdeinit which
complains that $DISPLAY is not set. Ends up
using another windows (fvm or something) regardless
of whether I satrt with starx, or startx kde...
What's the problem and is there a workaround for this?
Right now I have all of kde-3.4 except base installed
with a few dependancy issues but no other problems.
